Ethan's Sleep Apnea

Another day, another doctor. And another excellent outcome!!! Appearantly, sleep apnea is fairly common in Down's kids and there can be a 10% drop in IQ in kids with sleep apnea. We were concerned that Ethan may have it, as he was a very noisy baby and on occasion it sounded like he snorted himself back to his regular sounding sleep (hope that description made sense).

Anyway, we met with a Pediatric Pulmonologist to have it checked out and learned that as of now, there are no signs of sleep apnea. Of course, this can always change, but for now he's good. But we were glad to have met with the doctor as he gave us lots of info.

Ethan does suffer from reflux and while our regular pediatrician wasn't concerned about it, this doctor gave us some tips on dealing with it and what to look for. He wants Ethan to get a bit of food or cereal with each feeding (all I can think of is more colored spit up on my carpets, but I'll try it...).

At this point, we'll just keep our ears out for lots of coughing and any snoring and then we'll go back to see him in 4-5 months for a follow up. He said Ethan looked really good, was doing everything developmentally for a typical baby his age. He even commented that lots of Down babies have high IQ's and there's nothing to suggest that Ethan's won't be typical. So, of course, Jason and I are again thrilled with this doctor's appointment.

Sorry for no pictures with this post ... seems to be a problem with the site. I'll try to post some tomorrow.

What good news Ellen. I like the way you and Jason are being so proactive with Ethan. I am not surprised by the reflux diagnosis, since that is basically what you had at that same age. And, as far as the comment about Downs children being highly intelligent, I personally think he will be a little computer genius, specializing in long distance communications!

Having a Great Visit with Aunt Delly

I know it's been a VERY long time since I've last posted, but it's hard when you have company in town. Plus, I've been especially exhausted this past week. Jack get's so excited when we have visitors that he gets even crazier than normal! September should be fun when we have Daddy, Granny and Grandma in town. I've been continuously changing up our great room bookshelves, so I thought I would post a photo for you to see. If anyone has more ideas on how to make it look better, let me know. These are some pictures of Jack at gymnastics. He has gotten so much better at this club. They do a lot more strengthening stuff than the old place. Plus they have an older boys class so they don't just teach girly stuff at this age. It's been fun to see him do so well. Of course, a lot of time he still goofs around, trying to fall off stuff, but for the most part he's pretty good at staying on task. Last week they did the monkey bars and he LOVED it and was...

Busy week

It's been a busy week with little things here and there, which is getting me ready for the busy summer ahead of us with gymnastics, swimming and all Ethan's therapies. Whew, I need a break from just thinking about it. We did have a nice walk down to our community playground this afternoon. Ethan couldn't stop laughing on the swings and the slide (he couldn't get enough of the slide) and Jack made a little friend! Great afternoon. Speaking of therapies, Ethan starts his occupational therapy next week and I'm so excited. We got the therapy notes back from his evaluation and, while I'm not positive on how I'm reading it, the scores say from poor to very poor. We have been very lucky that Ethan hasn't had any medical issues and so far he seems to be doing well with responding to his therapies, so I really want to make sure he has the best of everything. Today has just made me a little blue thinking about Ethan not being 100% of what other kids are and ...

Last Day in Prague

Our last full day in Prague. We had a late night parting the night before and a very early morning excursion but this was the one I was excited for! We did a similar excursion in Italy and loved it too. This was an awesome city bike tour to the Vysehrad Castle. We stopped for photo ops along the way - including here along the Charles River. But it's all fun and games until someone gets stopped by the Polizia! Before we left on our trip I was told to make sure you stay away from the police, so I was surprised to come up the big steep hill to see Jason stopped by one. I guess our tour guides didn't get the permit to ride in the park (too close to kids and a school). We had all just come up a big steep hill and were separated from the front of our group. Jason stopped to wait for me and the rest of the group to make sure we knew where to go. We had three guides, on leading, one in the middle who pulled away from Jason, and then one at the back. ...
