Last November (2013) Jason took over command of his Alabama National Guard Unit. It was a very big deal and we had plans of coming to watch the ceremony. His stepmom was coming into town and we were all going to drive down to the event - his unit is location in Southern Alabama near the border of Alabama and Florida.
Anyway, due to budget issues they had to cancel that weekend of drill, so the rescheduled the ceremony to the following month, and one that I wasn't able to attend.
A few months ago Jason was selected to be promoted to Major. This is a huge deal but a sad one, as Jason was no longer able to lead his group and had to move to a new command. The Change of Command ceremony was the first weekend of December this year. It was also their Family Day on Sunday, so we all drove down together on the Saturday.
While Jason was off playing Army the boys and I found some things to do in the small town of Dothan. Luckily it was a warm, sunny day and there was a park right by the Army Unit.
The boys really enjoyed running around and getting their wiggles out after spending 5+ hours in the car on the drive down.
Here is where Wyatt learned how to slide down the fireman pole on his own.
It was a great park.
When Jason was done there we drove to the even smaller town of Hartford, where his official unit is located. The boys loved the tank out front - and really loved that since Daddy was in charge of everything, they could climb all over it!!
The next morning we got ready to attend the ceremony and Family Day with Santa. I know I posted this picture twice but I love the way that Wyatt is looking up at Jack. You can just see how much he idolizes his big brother.
All dressed up and ready to go.
They served us a nice Thanksgiving dinner at the Armory but the boys were more interested in playing. Jack loved that he got to see and touch all the weapons.
Wyatt loved that he could run around and be crazy.
And Ethan loved that he could make new friends.
Then the boys all got gifts from Santa.
Then it was time for the ceremony to begin.
Jason is on the far left-hand side, facing his troops.
He got an award and a new ribbon to add to his jacket.
His troops for a few more minutes.
Then the Change of Command.
Jason gave a short speech telling them all how much he enjoyed leading them and that it was THE.MOST fun he's had in his almost 20 years in the military. I know it was very hard for him to leave this command.
He was given another award.
The unit's symbol.
The troops!
The leaders.
